Who are the breakout San Diego Section boys basketball stars of 2020?
Scorebook Live California reporter Bodie DeSilva breaks down 10 players who have had breakout 2019-2020 seasons in San Diego Section boys basketball. (The list is in alphabetical order.)
10 BREAKOUT PLAYERS
Mickey Chew – G – junior – Orange Glen HS
Chew has gone from nine points per game last season to over
16 points per game this year and is shooting 40 percent from three-point range
on over 200 attempts.
Alexander Crawford – F – junior – Eastlake HS
Crawford has gone from seven points per game last season to
nearly 17 points per game this season. He led the upset of Mater Dei Catholic a
few weeks back and has the Titans as the three-seed in the division three
playoffs.
Robert Ligayon – G – senior – Mission Hills HS
Ligayon, an excellent shooter, has been the leading charge
for the Grizzlies who have more than doubled last season’s win total.
Wayne McKinney – G – junior – Coronado HS
McKinney transferred in from Oregon this past summer and has
quickly made his mark as one of San Diego’s best. He’s averaging 29 points, eight
rebounds, and four assists for Islanders who are the two-seed in division
three.
Zach Moore – F – senior – Del Norte HS
Moore has seen his averages go from 12 points and eight
rebounds per game last season up to 17 points per game and ten rebounds this
season. He’s among the county leaders in steals and helped the Nighthawks upset
Escondido in round one.
Jailen Nelson – G – senior – Carlsbad HS
The leader for the Lancers has doubled his scoring average from
a year ago, up to 25 points per game, and appears to be a lock on the All-CIF
team.
DJ Ralston – G – junior – San Diego HS
After transferring over from Mission Bay, Ralston has had a great
season paired up with fellow junior guard AJ Burgin.
Tyson Robinson – G – junior – El Camino HS
Robinson led the Wildcats to an undefeated league title and
back into the county’s top ten rankings, while routinely stuffing every
category of the stat sheet.
Keaton Webb – F – junior – Tri City Christian HS
Webb has improved his scoring average from six points per
game as a freshman to 13 points per game as a sophomore to 24 points per game
this season. He led the Eagles to the six-seed in the division three playoffs.
Dillon Wilhite – C – junior – Cathedral Catholic HS
Wilhite has been one of the county’s top big men this season and has made his presence felt as a much-improved rim protector.
