Arkansas high school cross country state meet results (11/4/2023)
State champions were decided at the Arkansas high school state cross country meets at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs on Thursday and Friday. Here are the results.
CLASS 6A
Bentonville was the runaway winner in the boys division with 17 points while Springdale-Har Bar was a distant second with 106 points. In the girls division, Rogers edged out Bentonville 35-40 with Fayetteville a distant third at 101.
In the boys division, Bentonville took five of the top six spots with Matthew Shelly winning with a time of 15:19.43 on the 5,000-meter course. Owen Kelly was second at 15:21.61 and James American Horse was third at 15:29.20. Jonathan Mendez of Har-Ber broke up the Bentonville group with a fourth-place finish of 15:53.51. Bentonville’s Peyton Brack was fifth at 15:55.23 and Eli Seavy was sixth at 16:02.02
In the girls division, Haley Loewe and Devyn O’Daniel of Bentonville finished first and second in 17:49.77 and 18:34.38. Rogers had the next three finishers with Kayla Eggers (18:38.68), Lilly Beshears (18:40.19) and Katherine Scudder (18:57.97). Bentonville’s Hannah Hanson was 10th (19:13.97) with teammates Madyen Hatuba (19:31.92) and Everly O’Daniel (19:34.33) 13th and 14th, but Rogers’ Elizabeth Scudder (19:27.30) and Anna Scudder (19:30.18) finished 11th and 12th to make the difference.
CLASS 5A
Mountain Home was the boys champion, finishing with 39 points while Russellville was a distant second at 72 points and Hot Springs Lakeside was third at 92 points. On the girls side, Greenwood edged out Russellville 65-75 with Lake Hamilton third at 119 points.
Joseph Bariola of Hot Springs Lakeside won the individual boys title in 15:22.06 while Russellville’s River Hardman was second at 16:07.96.
Mountain Home dominated the top 10 with William Hill finishing third (16:10.27); Hendrix Hughes was fifth (16:27.37); Garrett Barr was sixth (16:28.37) and Connor King was ninth (16:29.98). In addition, Trenton Smith was 16th (16:51.99).
On the girls side, the individual champion was Aubrey Minton of Valley View, who who with a time of 19:14.89 while Russellville’s Brooklyn Nicholson was second in 19:46.43.
Greenwood was led by Carole Werner, who finished third (19:52.88); Julia Witherington, who was ninth (20:26.84); Piper Ames, who was 14th (21:00.74); Paige Andrews, who was 19th (21:12.41) and Camryn Coston, who was 22nd (21:21.02). In addition to Nicholson, Russellville was led by Paxton Lawlis, who was eighth (20:25.99); Lilly Stubblefield, who was 11th (20:47.36); and Kelly Hernandez, who was 23rd (21:23.77).
CLASS 4A
Pea Ridge edged out Shiloh Christian 72-77 for the boys title while Gravette and Pottsville were tied for third at 106 points.On the girls side, Gravette topped Clinton 60-62 with De Queen and Berryville tied for third at 142 points.
On the boys side, Pea Ridge was led by Tian Grant, who won with a time of 16:20.25. His was followed by Troy Ferguson in fourth place (17:07.56), Camren Smith in 15th place (17:44.13) and Cruz Porter in 19th (17:57.01) and Ryan Lewis, who was 34th (18:29.79).
Shiloh Christian was led by Matthew Thurman, who finished second in 16:32.06 and followed by Cooper Sudduth in 14th (17:42.54), Carson Herron in 17th (17:49.50), Joby Butler who was 20th (18:03.29) and Jack Hope who was 25th (18:14.81)
Maddie Cabana of Clinton won the girl title with a time of 18:36.80. Gravette had three runners in the top seven with Julia Whorton finishing second (20:07.00), Keira Ralph finishing fifth (20:53.43) and Litzy Garcia finishing seventh (21:14.26). Anna Kedrowski was 24th (22:23.71) and Celia Chernota was 26th (22:39.18).
Clinton did its best to close the gap with Allyson Wallace (21:26.94) finishing ninth, Gracee Linville (21:50.28) finishing 16th, Finley Newland (22:05.04) finishing 17th and Callie Shaver (22;52.53) finishing 30th.
CLASSS 3A
West Fork won the boys title with 73 points, topping Maumelle Charter by 13 points. The girls title went to Episcopal Collegiate, which edged out Harding Academy 42-45, despite the fact Harding Academy had three of the top four finishers.
In the boy meet, while Bald Knob’s Owen Shaffer won in 16:49.82; Rocky Stone of Harding Academy was second in 16:56.78 and Jessieville’s Kaleb Eskew was third in 16:57.82. West Fork had four runners finish fifth through 20th. Kayden DenHerder was fifth (17:33.52); Henry DenHerder was 12th (18:30.78); Robbie Preston was 13th (18:32.30); and Cody Slige was 20th (19:03.19).
Maumelle Charter had three runners finish seventh through 17th in Christian McGill (17:38.78). Roth Williamson was ninth (17:49.85) and Caleb McFarland was 17th (18:44.17).
In the girls meet, Harding Academy’s Elle Williamson (19:53.29) and Zoe Williamson (19:55.03) were first and second while Anna Stone (20:59.10) was fourth. The next two Harding runners wee Lauren Pullen, who was 23rd (23:10.21) and Lola Madden (23:33.81) who was 28th.
Episcopal had five runners finish sixth through 15th which made the difference. nLauren Humiston was sixth (21:09.93); Ella Gary was eighth (21:23.41); Clare Hammers was 12th (21:30.09); Stella Cochran was 14th (22:07.0); and Caroline Brantley was 15th (22:07.35) which made the difference.
CLASS 2A
Haas Hall Bentonville was the boys title with 40 points while Greenland was second with 66. Quitman won the girls title with 31 points while Dierks was second with 45 points, despite having two of the top four runners.
Jacen Heiner of Haas Hall Bentonville won the race in 17:37.07 while his teammate Parker Moore was second in 17:53.16. Easton Combs was ninth in 18:44.94; Blake Sustain was 11th in 19:00.93 and Ryder Smith was 19th in 19:23.12.
Greenland’s top two runners were Cooper Spurlock, who finished third (18:04.98) and Collin Orvin, who was fourth (18:11.91). While Cannon Spurlock finished 10th (18:56.00), the Pirates’ next runner was Mason Kelso, who was 23rd (19:49,05).
Bella Tedder of Acorn won the individual title (20:36.37) while Kalee Mounts of Dierks was second (21:12.05) and Carlee Mounts was fourth (21:15.65). Olivia Prothro of Mountainburg was third (21:13.36).
Quitman won the on the strength of five runners, who finished fifth through 15th led by Madilyn Varvil, who was fifth (21:24.66). Paislee Davis was sixth (21:33.33); Savannah Duncan was eighth (21:36.81); Allison Carter was 11th (22:22.11); and Dakota Rhodes was 15th (22:55.48).
After Kalee Mount and Carlee Mounts, Dierks’ next runners were Sydney Mounts (14th, 22:50.05); Aspen Pugh (17th, 23:08.70); and Hannah Kirby (27th, 24:35.65).
CLASS 1A
Ozark Catholic won the boys title with 32 points while Kingston was a distant second with 112 points. Kingston won the girls title with 37 points while Founders Classical was second with 67 points.
Isaac Pohlmeier won the race for Ozark Catholic in 16:31.04 as the rest of his teammates finished in the top 10. Joey Squillace was fifth (17:59.96); Ben Frederick was seventh (18:29.83); John Paul Schaefer was ninth (18:42.30); and Liam Burney was 10th (18:42.57).
Kingston’s Josh Cooper was second (17:29.83); Nicholas Wheeler of Founders Classical was third (17:34.27) and Peyton Jones of Scranton was fourth (17:54.30).
On the girls side, Missy Wilson of Viola won the race (20:44.29) while Clare Pohlmeier was second (21:17.12).
Kingston had five runners finish third through 16th led by Aslyn Cooper (21:49.87). Callie Edgmon was fifth (22:33.10); LeeLou Kilbourn was eighth (23:03.49); Hope Cooper was 12th (23:24.58); and Camberlyne Shrun was 16th (23:46.27).
Founders Classical and four runners finish fourth through 11th led by Mariana Keiser (22:26.29). Adelaide Ledbetter was sixth (23:37.06); Aurora Pace was 10th (23:06.76); and Elliot Ledbetter was 11th (23:13.16). Their fifth runner was Alexis Christiano, who finished 52nd (27:39.25).
